The stained glass windows were in poor condition, and the central medallion was broken. In 2011 Aaron Grayson rebuilt them.
This dogwood design, which is based on a detail from a window at the Legislature, replaces the original red medallion. Aaron was able to convince glass artist Thomas Mercer to design and make the new medallion.
Another surprise. Under several layers of wallpaper in the stairwell, was a layer of lincrusta wallpaper, glazed in two-tones.
Despite several tries, no one was able to fix the drawers so that they did not fall out when used.
Lorraine Barwick patiently removed layer upon layer of wallpaper, here in the kitchen, which originally had been a bedroom. The floor had been painted green, and the fir flooring was in good condition.
The apartment was painted yellow throughout. Both bathrooms were pink, and there was pink tile on the walls of the ensuite bathroom, now updated with white subway tiles. For an appreciation of pink bathrooms see http://savethepinkbathrooms.com/
The guest bathroom before renovation.
A surprise: when abatement was done to remove four layers of linoleum, we found fir floors underneath, and also discovered a clawfoot tub under the dilapidated tub surround.
When the wood and tile tub surround was removed, a vintage tub emerged. Although I did not mind the original colour I painted it on an August weekend.
